Indonesia looks to enlarge its Russian fighters‘ fleet


Indonesia is to purchase up to 16 Sukhoi aircrafts within the country’s Armed Forces modernization and re-equipment programme.

According to Reuters referring Indonesian defence representatives, the authorities of South Asian country are determined to purchase over a dozen Sukhoi fighter planes.

Indonesia might purchase up to 16 Sukhoi aircrafts within the country’s Armed Forces modernization and re-equipment programme costing $15 billion. Indonesia already has 12 aircrafts of the series and according to the contract signed in 2011, Indonesia is to obtain 6 Su-30MK2 fighters at $470 million by 2015.

In December 2012 Russian Vnesheconombank and Indonesian Ministry of Finance executed a loan agreement on granting a $399.5 million credit to Indonesia for 7 years. The means are aimed for financing Russian aviation equipment deliveries within the export contract concluded by Rosoboronexport and Defence Ministry of Indonesia.

Indonesia is the leader of South Asian economy. It has been intensively expanding its defence budget since 2010. Increased focus on the country’s Armed Forces is caused by the necessity of security maintenance and especially, the islands and maritime boundaries defence. Besides, the neighbouring China, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand have also increased their defence expenses.
