Rostec Develops Innovative Scanner for Measuring Vehicle Dimensions

A new laser scanner developed by the Shvabe Holding will operate as part of an automated road weight and dimensional control system for the transportation of heavy and oversized cargo. The first tests of a prototype device are scheduled for the second half of 2021.

The Shvabe laser scanner is able to monitor space using the infrared spectrum and determine the distance to detected objects. The device as part of an automated system for weight and dimensional control will determine the parameters of freight transport at stationary points of road infrastructure.

“Currently, this development has no analogues in Russia. The first Russian scanner will be included in the structure of an intelligent transport system, ready for integration into the systems of the Center for Automated Recording of Administrative Offenses. The device is versatile and can also be used in port and railway infrastructure as well as at social and cultural facilities”, said Oleg Yevtushenko, executive director of Rostec.

The scanner monitors the movement of vehicles, determines their location and dimensions, ensures safe loading and unloading in ports and monitors the appearance of unauthorized personnel. Also, the device can be used at level crossings for safe transit. In addition, the device can be used to geo-map areas.
