Lytkarino Optical Glass Factory included in Shvabe holding demonstrates meteorological optical range and cloud ceiling measurement instruments at the Weather – Climate – Water exhibition in Saint Petersburg. To date, weather measurement problems are mainly addressed in Russia using foreign solutions and Shvabe’s instruments will replace them.

The exposition includes a nephelometer prototype for meteorological optical range measurements and two ceilometer prototypes — a laser ceilometer and a cloud ceiling recorder. The instruments may be operated both in standalone mode and as part of weather stations. Measurements are sent to a remote computer for further analysis.

Ceilometers are devices that measure remotely the distance from the ground to a cloud base. Such data acquisition is a mandatory requirement for airfields and helipads because ceiling measurement is one of the key weather forecast tools. The shown instrumentation versions measure the cloud ceiling in the range from 1,000 to 3,000 meters.

The nephelometer is designed for automatic measurements of a meteorological optical range along a horizontal path. This range is affected by dust, solid and liquid precipitation, smoke, fog, etc. This data is essential to ensures flight safety as well as for sea and inland navigation. The measurement range is from 10,000 to 50,000 meters.
