While retaining the hallmarks of Kalashnikov firearms, new assault rifles have received enhanced combat capabilities, improved ergonomics, compatibility with modern sighting systems for operation in day and night time. It is these rifles that are officially recommended by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation for all branches of the Russian Armed Forces. These models may replace in future all existing generations of Kalashnikov assault rifles used by Russian law enforcement agencies: from AKM and AKMS to AK74M.
The 5.45mm AK-12 is the latest type of individual automatic firearm used by the Russian Armed Forces. The AK-12 is included in the Ratnik tactical gear. This model is the apex of AK system evolution and is distinguished from the previous generations by its increased accuracy and dispersion of fire, improved ergonomics and round-the-clock availability.
The AK-12 edition 2023 differs considerably from the assault rifle fielded in 2018. Following the results of application in the special military operation zone, some requirements for the firearm imposed by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation have been changed and Kalashnikov’s engineers have modified the design accordingly. In particular, a diopter sight has been changed to offer easy aiming in any conditions.
The trigger has received a double-acting safety lock and fire selector to make the rifle suitable for both right-handed and left-handed shooters, and to streamline the firearm control in modern dynamic operational environment.
The new model has a permanent muzzle device, and the sound moderator can be attached to the rifle without flame arrester removal.
The AK-12 edition 2023 is furnished with a modernized forearm with improved grip and shooter’s hand protection.
