Rostec will Equip Five Angara Launch Vehicles with Extra Strong Payload Fairings

ORPE Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin will make payload fairings for five launch vehicles from the Angara family. Extra strong structures withstand extreme loads and protect the payload during atmospheric penetration. Having a weight of a little more than 1 ton, the protective composite fairing body reaches a height of a five-storey building.

The payload fairing contains several components – shells. These are high-performance products consisting of two composite layers with an aluminium honeycomb core between them. As a result, the fairing withstands extreme loads during the flight to orbit. For example, temperatures higher than 700 degrees Celsius and rapid temperature drops. A set for the Angara-A5 version contains eight components, a set for the Angara-1.2 version contains six components.

“Rostec has high aerospace competency. For example, Obninsk-based Technologiya manufactures the world’s lightest solar cell frames for artificial satellites and other products. The company’s product range also includes payload fairings for new Russian Angara launch vehicles. The products are up to 17 meters in height and almost 4.5 meters in diameter. Whilst the structure is very light – 1100 kg. Thus, the space rocket weight has been reduced and high payload has been achieved. Technologiya is to manufacture a total of five sets for two Angara-A5 and three Angara-1.2 launch vehicles,” said Oleg Evtushenko, Executive Director of Rostec State Corporation.
