Uralvagonzavod Ready to Upgrade Czech Cars in the Tram Fleet of Russia

Uralvagonzavod, a member of the Rostec State Corporation, and Czech company Pragoimex have signed a memorandum on the transfer of technical documentation for upgrade of Czech cars occupying one-third of the Russian tram fleet. The memorandum was signed as part of the Russian-Czech economic forum in Moscow and was witnessed by Miloš Zeman, the President of the Czech Republic.

This memorandum of agreement between Uralvagonzavod and Pragoimex determines core lines of cooperation for Tatra tram cars upgrade. The total fleet of tram cars in Russia is above 8 thousand units, including more than 2.5 thousand Czech cars.

The cars will be upgraded at the production facilities of Uralvagonzavod, JSC Uraltransmash in Yekaterinburg. Pragoimex provides maintenance support – overhaul and upgrade of tram bogies to the "comfort" level.

"The memorandum clearly defines that our Czech partners possess the necessary know-how for heavy upgrade of tram cars of T3 series. We will get familiarised with them and will be provided with all the necessary technical documentation, and technical support during the project implementation. We will manufacture the components, perform the upgrade and attract new customers", told Deputy General Director for Civilian Products of the Research and Production Corporation Uralvagonzavod Boris Myagkov.

The upgrade will allow to make the trams similar to modern low-floor trams. New interior will make the new cars more attractive, and they will be faster and more accessible for people with disabilities. Besides, the price of a heavily upgraded tram is much lower than the price of a new single-section tram car. What is really important is that there will be no need to attract new investments to the maintenance infrastructure and service depots after the upgrade. Production capacities of JSC Uraltransmash allow to manufacture 150 new and upgraded trams per year.
