Press release
Rostec Government Corporation presented state-of-the-art armaments at the IDEX 2013 international show in the United Arab Emirates. Demonstration of the upgraded T-90S tank and the unique Terminator battlefield support fighting vehicle was the highlight of the show.
The 11th international IDEX-2013 defense show ended on February 21 in Abu-Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the most authoritative defense trade show across the Middle East and North Africa. This year’s show was the largest ever, with 1,112 defense manufacturers of 59 countries displaying their products.
The Russian exposition organized by Rostec is one of the largest at IDEX-2013. Leading defense manufacturers and traders represented Rostechnologii Government Corporation: Rosoboronexport, Izhmash, Tsniitochmash, S.A. Zverev Krasnogorsk Plant, Сompas Moscow Design Bureau, Vysokotochnye Kompleksy, Techmash and others.
Rostec General Director Sergey Chemezov joined Denis Manturov on February 18 for a meeting with the His Highness Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces Muhammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The conversation took place during the Crown Prince’s tour of the Russian exposition.
Rosoboronexport is traditionally one of the key participants in the trade show. This year, the Rosoboronexport exposition was based around a new version of an interactive exhibition complex using modern Russian simulators giving specialists a way to explore the specs and capabilities of Russian ground equipment and aircraft.
Demonstration of the upgraded T-90S tank and the unique Terminator battlefield support fighting vehicle became the highlight of IDEX 2013. The battlefield support fighting vehicle was on static display, while the tank participated in the parade opening the show.
Also during IDEX 2013, NPO SPLAV, a leading manufacturer of multiple missile launcher and a division of Techmash, presented a new 80mm S-8OFP unguided rocket for tactical and battlefield (army) aircraft. The rocket is an advanced development of the widely-known and proven S-8 rocket. Airborne platforms for S-8OFP include jets Sukhoi Su-24, Su-25, Su-27; MiG-23, MiG-27, Mig-29; helicopters Mil Mi-8, Mi-28; Kamov Ka-50, Ka-52 and other aircraft models. The new airborne rockets open up the possibility of creating a wide range of state-of-the-art effective airborne ordnance. The new design can serve as the basis for new small-profile adjustable-trajectory and guided missiles.
Designs by other companies under the Techmash umbrella were showcased during IDEX 2013: aerial bombs, close-combat equipment, jamming countermeasures and Osa tubeless weapon system. In addition to new ground military equipment, the Russian delegation at the show presented comprehensive upgrade programs for previously supplied equipment, primarily T-72 tanks and BMP-2 and BMP-3 personnel carriers.
The Russian exposition also featured modern anti-aircraft systems, most of them manufactured by the dedicated AA equipment manufacturer Almaz-Antey. In fact, all Russian export AA equipment models from man-portable AA rocket systems to long-range systems were the focus of practical interest in the region, Rosoboronexport specialists note.
New Izhmash products presented at the show for the first time include upgraded 100-series Kalashnikov assault rifles (AK-101, AK-102, AK-103, AK-104, AK-107) with improved ergonomics and an integrated Picatinny rail for mounting the whole spectrum of modern accessories and attachments, including scope and electroscopic sights, as well as laser target pointers. Exhibition visitors also got to see the new SV-99 sniper rifle and Vityaz-SN submachine gun. Already established products at the Izhmash booth included the Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD), SVDS, Bison, AN-94, GP-34, SV-98 submachine guns, and Kitolov-2M and Krasnopol guided artillery rounds.
Izhmash’s civilian exposition featured the Saiga-12 shotgun and Bi-7-2-KO small-bore rifle for law enforcers, Saiga-12 Mod. 340 for practice shooting, airsoft version of AK-74M with a plastic and wooden stock, as well as Saiga MK and Saiga-9 hunting carbines.
Tsniitochmash (“precision machinery engineering”) brought to IDEX 2013 a modified SR.1M handgun, SR.2M submachine and the new SR.3M automatic assault rifle, quiet, small, powerful weapon and the unique PKP Pecheneg single-barrel machine gun rated for 30,000 shots. The company also displayed a mock-up 120mm towed rifled semiautomatic breech-loading Nina-M1 (2B23) mortar. The mortar weighs approximately 500 kilograms and can fire 120mm mortar rounds from any manufacturer (including international makers), as well as pre-rifled rounds. Russian 120mm mortar rounds have yields comparable to those of HE fragmentation 155mm shells.
The V.A. Degtyarev Plant’s exposition included weapons samples from the company and a number of other Russian designers currently in series production. Products such as 3UBK20, 3UBK14F-1 guided sub-caliber tank rounds, the upgraded 9M120-1 Ataka anti-tank rocket, Kord heavy machine gun and 6C8 high-precision 12.7mm sniper rifle attracted the most interest.
The Instrument Design Bureau came to IDEX 2013 with products in greatest demand on international markets, ranging from the Pantsir-S1 AA gun and missile system to small arms models. The company unveiled Kornet-EM anti-tank system, Bur grenade launcher and VKS 12.7mm sniper rifle for the first time this year.
NPO Mashinostroyeniya brought to the show space-based systems, including a remote Earth probe system relying on Condor-E small spacecraft with a synthetic-aperture radar (the technology makes it possible to obtain radar images of the surface regardless of the weather condition and lighting with detail rivaling that of aerial photography), and a version using optical-electronic equipment.
Kovrov Electromechanical Plant brought its traditional products to the show: ordnance stabilization and guidance systems and navigation systems for tanks and armored vehicles. The new STNO laser topographic orientation system attracted especial interest.
Compas MBK presented latest-generation personal gear: a portable navigator and an A-737PLM protected command tablet, an IM-2 space navigation system signal simulator and a satellite-guided landing system.
Rostec and Rosoboronexport booths at IDEX 2013 witnessed a range of negotiations on various aspects with prospective customers and business partners from different regions that are laying a solid foundation for future cooperation.
Rostec subsidiaries’ participation in IDEX 2013 has given a new impetus to develop and reinforce military technology cooperation between Russian Federation and international partners, notably the states of the Middle East.
