United Engine Corporation has completed the main set of tests of the advanced PD-8 engine designed for regional airliners and is preparing to finish certification. The propulsion systems have demonstrated reliable operation in adverse climatic conditions during bench testing and Superjet test flights in Arkhangelsk.

The PD-8 has passed certification testing in icing conditions at the bench of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors. Testing lasted for three months and involved simulation of real in-flight conditions.

During testing, water was injected into the airflow entering the engine. The purpose of testing was to evaluate the engine resistance and performance in icing conditions, and the strength of structural members when the accumulated ice was removed.

The PD-8 engines have also demonstrated fail-safe operation in the Arkhangelsk Region during certification flights of the Superjet in natural icing conditions.

During testing, the aircraft flew into severe icing zone where ice crust with a thickness ranging from 8 mm to 10 mm formed in a short time. The flights validated the design specifications and results of the previous bench testing.

The PD-8 has successfully passed 150 hour testing with long-term operation simulation. Bird strike, blade off and water ingestion tests were successfully carried out earlier at an open test bench and demonstrated reliable operation of the engine in critical conditions. The engine has also demonstrated its performance during acoustic testing, propulsion system operation in crosswind conditions and during thrust reverser testing.
