Rostec New Product to Improve Safety of High-speed Electric Trains

The company will produce up-to-date glazing to be used in extreme climatic conditions

The “Rostec” State Corporation will produce up-to-date heavy-duty glazing for EP20 “Olymp” electric locomotives. The sets of glazing for the first two electric locomotives will be produced in April at the Obninsk “Technology” Science and Production Company, a part of the “Rostec” State Corporation. The new glazing is set to prevent icing at high speeds and provides additional safety for electric locomotive operators.

While moving at high speeds of over 200 km/h, an electric locomotive glazing is being covered with ice that reduces vision and causes possible danger to the whole train. The “Rostec” State Corporation will produce a new type of glazing with enhanced parameters to be used in extreme climatic conditions. Silicate pentaplex glazing with curved surface is produced to be completely electrically heated. The glazing retains its optical characteristics regardless of the weather and is impact resistant to provide comfort and safety for an electric locomotive operator.

EP20 “Olymp” is the most popular electric locomotive in Russia. The machine is a product of cooperation of the Russian “ATR Trans” and French “Alstom” Company. The first serial locomotives were launched at Moscow – Adler route during the Sochi Olympics. Currently the locomotives are being operated at routes to Saint-Petersburg (Nevsky Express), Helsinki, Adler, Brest, Voronezh, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhniy Novgorod, Kazan, Novorossiysk, Kislovodsk, Minsk, Nazran, Yekaterinburg and other destinations.
