United Engine Corporation is creating the GTD-8SM, a new generation intelligent gas turbine engine with a power of 8 MW. The solution is designed to drive electric generators as part of power generating units that produce electric power for data centers, industrial and other distributed power generation facilities. The engine will receive a modern control system and a digital twin. The first prototype is to be made in 2028.

The engine is being designed on the basis of the AL-31ST core engine. The GTD-8SM encompasses state-of-the art control and digital tracking technologies. The digital twin will be used for in-process health assessment of a particular engine, proactive detection of wear signs and establishment of the optimum maintenance frequency.

Modular design will be one of key benefits of the GTD-8SM. Compressor module, combustion chamber, power turbine and accessory drive will be made as self-contained functional units. Due to this, replacement of individual components will not require disassembly of adjacent assemblies and employment of specialized workshop equipment on site. This solution will reduce maintenance time and power generating equipment downtime.

Design time between overhauls of the GTD-8SM will be 30,000 hours, assigned lifetime will be at least 120,000 hours. Provision is made for engine operation at ambient temperatures from -60°C to +40°C. Final specifications will be validated during testing.
