More than 240,000 Russians, including 75,000 residents of Moscow, have applied for biometric travel passports using cryptobiobooths made by Concern Avtomatika. In the nearest future, the booths are to be integrated into the Unified Biometric System that can be used by the citizens to access government services with biometric data.

A cryptobiobooth is a state-of-the-art Russian software and hardware package designed to receive and process documents, verify personal data of citizens, including biometric data. Cryprobiobooths make it possible to simplify and speed up the travel passport issuing process.

The travel passport application process used at a Multifunctional Public Services Center consists of two stages. First, the applicant’s electronic questionnaire is entered into the information system by the Multifunctional Public Services Center personnel. The applicant gets a unique bar code that is used to get access to biometric data submission. Then face and fingerprints are scanned in the cryptobiobooth. The process is computerized as much as possible and is carried out by the applicant without somebody’s help. After this, all data is sent to the Interior Ministry for review and making a decision on the issue of a new passport.

In the nearest future, the developers are going to add a voice sampling function to the equipment. This will allow to integrate the booth into the Unified Biometric System that can be used by the citizens to access government services with biometric data.
