Rostec to Supply Composite Units for MC-21

Rostec will launch commercial production of oversized carbon fibre fin box and tail group parts for the MC-21 aircraft. The Corporation will launch commercial production of the composite units for the frame as early as in November this year, and by late 2018 it will ensure installation of units on the first five aircraft.

The agreement provides for manufacturing and supply to the customer of oversized carbon fibre fin box and tail group parts for the domestically built MC-21 airliner. The agreement on composite parts manufacturing was signed on behalf of Rostec by ORPE Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin (a member of the RT-Chemcomposite holding company), and on behalf of UAC – by the Irkut Corporation. The project implementation would allow the Rostec's enterprise to increase its share of civilian products manufacturing.

"The tail parts have been successfully tested under static and dynamic conditions. Our enterprise is completely ready to launch commercial production of MC-21 units. ORPE Technologiya will launch commercial production of composite units for the frame as early as in November 2017, and by late 2018 it will ensure installation of units on the first five aircraft", stated Industrial Director of the Armament Cluster of the Rostec State Corporation Sergey Abramov.

As part of the cooperation aimed at building the airliner the Rostec State Corporation's enterprise has developed a technology for manufacturing of fin box and tail group power units made of composite materials with a wide use of automated technologies for laying and cutting the prepreg layers. The new equipment capacities will be used for the launch of commercial production. The project will result in an increase of the enterprise's civilian products share by 3-5% which will positively affect the Armament Cluster's Strategy implementation.

Carbon fibre structures for the long-range airliners of the XXI century will be built at the upgraded sites utilising advanced equipment, such as the unique system for prepreg laying that is unparalleled in Russia. The system allows to manufacture oversized items for prospective aviation equipment using domestic materials.

Readiness of ORPE Technologiya for the launch of commercial production of advanced technology products for the next-generation aircraft has been ascertained by experts of Bureau Veritas, the world's certification leader. Technologiya became one of the Russian enterprises whose quality management system has been certified as conforming to the newest international requirements of the aerospace standard АS/EN 9100:2016.
