Yuriy Koptev


Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of Rostec Corporation

Born on March 13, 1940, in Stavropol.


In 1965, Koptev graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University with a degree in aircraft. He also has a doctorate in technical sciences and holds the position of professor.

Professional activities

1957 – 1960 – served in the Armed Forces of the USSR.
1960 – 1964 – studied at Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
1964 – 1965 – technician and engineer at Enterprise 577.
1965 – 1969 – engineer, design engineer, and head of the coordination and control group at S. A. Lavochkin Machine Building Plant.

1969 – 1991 – senior engineer, chief engineer, deputy department head, and deputy minister of the Ministry of General Machine Building of the USSR.

1991 – 1992 – Vice President of the Russian Corporation of General Machine Building Rosobschemash.
1992 – 2004 – CEO of the Russian Space Agency; CEO of the Russian Aviation and Space Agency.
2004 – 2008 – Director of the Military-Industrial Complex Department of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Industry and Energy.
2008 – 2009 – Head of the group of advisers for Russian Technologies.
Since 2009 – Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of Rostec Corporation.


Koptev has been awarded:
The Orders of Lenin, the October Revolution, Red Banner of Labor, Honor, For Service to the Fatherland (II degree), For Service to the Fatherland (III degree);

the medals For Labor Valor, For 300 Years of the Russian Navy, and For 100 Years of the Air Force; 

a diploma of the Government of the Russian Federation;

a medal of honor from the CEO of the State Corporation Russian Technologies For Labor Achievements;

and state awards from France and Kazakhstan.

Koptev has also been recognized as a winner of the State Prize of the USSR; a two-time winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation; and winner of the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation named for Yu. A. Gagarin.

He also has the honorary titles Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation and Honored Aerospace Industry Specialist of the Russian Federation.

Personal life Koptev is married with two children
