High-accuracy weapon of new generation


International Aviation and Space salon MAKS presented the TBMS ‘Iskander’, ‘KB Mashinostroyeniya’ Kolomna Science-Producing Corporation development. The ‘Iskander’ series includes ‘Iskander’, ‘Iskander-E’ (export) and ‘Iskander-K’ (with cruise missile).

Although ‘Iskander’ system was designed in the Soviet Union, it meets all the contemporary requirements and its modified version doesn’t have any analogues concerning the performance and efficiency characteristics. ‘Iskander’ series is expected to form the foundation of Russian Armed Forces missiles. 120 new TBMSs are planned to be put in service by 2020. Currently the production facilities of 17 target enterprises are built and reconstructed for ‘Iskander-M’ serial manufacturing.

The ‘Iskander’ TBMS features:

• automated calculation and mission input when placing missiles on the launcher
• high battlefield mission performance even during countermeasures
• high exploitation reliability and failure-free launch preparing

• high strategic mobility due to the possibility of transportation by all types of vehicles including aircrafts

• long-term service and simple utilization.

TBMS ‘Iskander’ consists of missile, launching vehicle, trans-loader, routine maintenance vehicle, command vehicle, information preparing unit, arsenal equipment system and training aid.

The ‘Iskander’ emerging was an important event for Russian MIC as it gained an international advantage in its sector. The effective weapon of the type can play a key role in military-industrial development. TBMS is the weapon type meant to damaging the target in the operational depth from the battle line. ‘Iskander’ might be compared to nuclear weapon by its combat capabilities.

The system is fully correspondent to missile technology non-proliferation requirements including abandoning nuclear weaponry. The TBMS allows global navigation satellite systems (GLONASS, Navstar) data using, attacking moving goals and stationary targets with high security level, high fire power potential, air defence systems efficient avoiding.

Inertial control system transmitting the signal to the target seeking device (TSD) is used for targeting. Homing guidance principle is based on target-area terrain image formation which is passed to mission computer that matches the picture to the one put in when the missile was being prepared for the launch. Optical TSD has advanced sensitivity and radio-electronic warfare sustainment. This allows to missile launching in moonless nights without additional natural brighting and hitting the moving target with 1-2 metre tolerance. Nowadays ‘Iskander’ is the only missile in the world capable of meeting this challenge.

‘Iskander’ is a credible deterrent for NATO eastern expansion. Russian government declared setting for locating the system in Kaliningrad as a backlash to NATO Anti-ballistic Missile systems emerging in Eastern Europe in 2008. In 2005 the possibility of delivering the TBMS to Syria had a negative response of the USA and Israel.
