Ka-226T Helicopter – an All-Purpose Flying Machine

Operation efficiency, compliance with modern ecological standards and modern aviation equipment are the features that ensure Ka-226T helicopter one of the top positions among other helicopters of the same class. The model incorporates modular design and can be easily adapted for different functionalities. Ka-226T is available in a number of modifications, e.g., passenger, cargo, medical or search-and-rescue helicopter.

Russian multi-purpose helicopter Ka-226T helicopter was designed at Kamov Development Laboratories. The machine is a redeveloped version of a successful in the past Ka-26 model, widely used during the Soviet times. The new helicopter is equipped with two turboshift engines, instead of one as it was the case with its predecessor. The project was completed in 1996. The first helicopter was assembled in 1997 and came into operation on September 4.

In 2009 a modernized version of the helicopter was developed and in 2013 the serial production of the machine was started at Kumertau Aviation Production Factory. Ka-226T has become the first Russian helicopter that has been developed entirely with computer aid and no paper drawings. That significantly reduced the development time, while 3D-modelling helped to design the units and components of the machine more precisely.

The new Ka-226T model features engines from French aircraft motor manufacturer Turbomeca with enhanced power of up to 580 h. p. and full electronic control as well as completely redevised airborne avionics. Optional main rotor blades folding system, additional fuel tank, cargo hangers and search light are also available with Ka-226T model.

Ka-226T multi-purpose helicopter incorporates modular design and can be easily adapted for different functionalities. Ka-226TA could be equipped with a transportation cockpit that is designed to carry up to six additional persons, or containers with specialized equipment. Thus, Ka-226T is available in a number of modifications, e.g., passenger, cargo, medical or search-and-rescue helicopter.

Ka-226T multi-purpose helicopter is suitable for operation under extremely high temperatures. That was proved during last year’s tests in Iran. The helicopter’s sustainability to extreme operation temperature is especially important for foreign customers from around the world. According to manufacturer’s representatives, Ka-226T multi-purpose helicopter has a strong export potential, not limited with the Middle East countries.

In the near future Ka-226T helicopters will be exported to India. Russian Helicopters have agreed with Indian corporation Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to set up a joint venture. The Indian side will receive 200 Russian machines - 60 preassembled 200 Ka-226T helicopters and 140 machines to be assembled locally. At first, the joined venture located in Bangalore will be engaged in production of components, and then take on the full assembly process.
