Young robotics enthusiasts to gather in Kazan

The Russian stage of the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) will take place in Kazan. Rostec will act as a general partner of the event.

The Robot Olympiad is already more than 10 years old, but in 2014 the Russian stage will take place for the first time outside of Moscow. Around a thousand robot enthusiasts from all over Russia between the ages of 6 to 20 will take part in the competitions.

Olympiad participants in Kazan will compete across six categories: main, freestyle, creative, student, robot football, and RoboTraffic.

Robots presented in each category must solve certain tasks. For example, in order to compete in the robot footbal category, a team must present two autonomous robots: an attacker and a goalkeeper, which, using a special infrared ball, will compete against enemy robots on a special field.

The basic task in the main category is to build and program a robot that must complete a certain task; the robot dimensions are limited to 25x25x25 cm.

Participants in the creative category must prepare a project on the topic of "Robots and space" or Robots and wildlife.  In the RoboTraffic category participants are tasked with building an autonomous computer-controlled robot model that can move along a predetermined path and follow traffic rules.

The winners of the main and creative competitions of the Russian stage will be included on the Russian national team and will represent the country at the World Robot Olympiad in Sochi in November 2014.

The most emotional robot in the world, Thespian, will be revealed at the Russian stage of the World Robot Olympiad in Kazan. It is designed specifically to carry out intellectual and creative work and is able to recite poems, sing songs and play theatrical roles. Thespian will perform on the same stage with President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, Minister of Communications and the Media Nikolai Nikiforov and Russian Education and Science Minister Dmitry Livanov.

The national WRO organizer, Innopolis University, is organizing the Olympiad with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Communications and Media of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Russian Association of Educational Robotics and the Institute of New Technologies. Secretary General of the World Robot Olympiad Claus Ditlev Kristiansen will attend the WRO. Minister of Communications and the Media Nikolai Nikiforov and Russian Education and Science Minister Dmitry Livanov are members of the Organizing committee of the World Robot Olympiad.

A total of 305 teams representing 35 Russian Regions have already registered on the website of the All-Russian stage of the WRO. Since the founding of the World Robot Olympiad 18,450 teams from 40 countries have registered as members of the Olympiad movement.
